Pink Ombre DIY Body Sugar Scrub with Dragon Fruit Powder

This ombre diy body sugar scrub started with the dragon fruit powder. The color was too pretty to mix into one solid shade, so I divided the scrub and created four pink layers instead.

It only takes a few ingredients, but it looks much more detailed once it is packed into the jar. I love it as a simple handmade gift, especially with a small wooden scoop and a pretty label.

Why You’ll Love This Ombre Sugar Scrub

This is an easy, homemade bath and body project that looks beautiful without requiring a complicated recipe.

  • It uses only a few basic ingredients.
  • The four pink shades are naturally colored with dragon fruit powder.
  • You can adjust the scent or leave it unscented.
  • It takes very little time to mix and layer.
  • One batch makes approximately 8 ounces, depending on the size of the sugar crystals and how firmly you pack the jar.

How to Make Ombre Body Sugar Scrub

Supplies and Ingredients:

You only need a few ingredients for this sugar scrub. I recommend having four small bowls or containers ready before you begin so you can mix the different shades without stopping.

  • Granulated sugar: This creates the scrub’s grainy texture. Regular white sugar also gives you a clean base for the pink color.
  • Carrier oil: Coconut and jojoba oil are my favorites for homemade scrubs. Olive oil also works, although its color and scent may be more noticeable.
  • Essential oil: This is optional, but a light floral scent works especially well with the pink layers. I couldn’t find tulip, so I used Jasmine.
  • Dragon fruit powder: This creates the shades of pink. Use a finely ground powder so it blends evenly into the scrub.
  • Four small mixing containers: You will need one for each shade.
  • Eight-ounce jar or container: Choose one with a tight-fitting lid. Depending on how firmly the scrub is packed, you may need a slightly larger jar.
  • Small spoon or spatula: This helps mix the colors and press the layers into the jar.

Instructions:

The complete measurements are included in the how-to card below, but here is how I mix and layer the scrub.

Step 1: Combine the Oils

Add ¼ cup of carrier oil to a small bowl. If you are adding fragrance, stir in 15 drops of essential oil. I used jasmine essential oils.

Mixing the essential oil into the carrier oil first helps distribute the fragrance more evenly throughout the sugar.

Step 2: Mix the Sugar Scrub

Place 1 cup of granulated sugar in a larger bowl. Pour the oil mixture over the sugar and stir until everything is evenly combined.

The texture should resemble damp sand. It should hold together slightly when pressed but should not have a puddle of oil sitting at the bottom.

If the scrub feels too dry, add a small amount of carrier oil, about ½ teaspoon at a time. If it feels overly oily, mix in a little more sugar.

Step 3: Divide the Scrub

Divide the sugar scrub as evenly as possible between four small containers.

The portions do not need to be weighed, but keeping them close to the same size will give you more even layers in the finished jar.

Step 4: Create the Four Pink Shades

Add dragon fruit powder to each portion:

  • Lightest shade: ¼ teaspoon
  • Second shade: ½ teaspoon
  • Third shade: ¾ teaspoon
  • Darkest shade: 1½ teaspoons

Note

Important: Dragon fruit powders vary by brand. The exact color may range from pale pink to a deeper magenta, so use the measurements as a starting point and adjust only when needed.

Mix each portion well until the powder is completely blended and you no longer see dark streaks or small clumps.

Dragon fruit powders can vary in strength, so compare the shades before filling the jar. Add a little more powder if two of the colors look too similar, but do this gradually.

Step 5: Layer the Sugar Scrub

Spoon the darkest pink scrub into the bottom of the jar. Gently press it into an even layer with the back of a small spoon.

Add the second-darkest shade and press it down carefully. Continue with the next shade, finishing with the lightest pink scrub on top.

Pressing each layer helps define the ombre effect, but do not pack it so firmly that the scrub becomes difficult to scoop.

Clean the inside edge of the jar as you work. Stray bits of darker scrub against the glass can make the layers look messy.

Crafting Tips

This project is simple, but a few small details make the finished jar look much better.

  • Use clear glass or plastic. The color graduation will not show through an opaque container.
  • Mix every shade thoroughly. Small clumps of dragon fruit powder can create dark spots.
  • Add the scrub close to the sides first. This helps create a clean, visible line around the inside of the jar.
  • Press gently between layers. Firm enough to flatten the scrub, but not so firmly that the oil is squeezed upward.
  • Keep the jar upright. The layers can shift if the container is turned on its side or shaken.
  • Use dry tools. Even a small amount of water can affect the scrub’s shelf life.

Sugar Scrub Variations

The ombre technique can be changed without changing the basic method.

  • Use cosmetic mica: Replace the dragon fruit powder with skin-safe cosmetic mica. Start with a very small amount because mica is usually more concentrated.
  • Leave it unscented: Skip the essential oil if you prefer fragrance-free bath products.
  • Try a floral scent: Lavender, geranium, or a skin-safe floral blend would all suit the soft pink color.
  • Make fewer layers: Divide the scrub into two or three portions for a simpler gradient.

Always use mica and essential oils specifically intended for cosmetic use. Do not use craft glitter, soap dye that is not approved for leave-on or rinse-off body products, or decorative mica of unknown quality.

How to Use Sugar Scrub

Scoop a small amount of scrub from the jar with clean, dry hands or a dry spoon. Massage it gently over damp skin using small circular motions, then rinse well.

I use sugar scrub mostly on hands, arms, legs, feet, elbows, and other rough areas. I would not use this coarse body scrub on the face or on irritated, freshly shaved, sunburned, or broken skin.

The oil can make the shower or tub slippery, so rinse the surface well after using it.

How to Store Homemade Sugar Scrub

Keep the scrub tightly covered in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Do not store it where shower water can splash directly into the jar.

Because this homemade scrub has not been professionally stability or preservative tested, I recommend using it within three to six months rather than promising a longer shelf life. The freshness of the carrier oil and dragon fruit powder will also affect how long it keeps.

Use a clean, dry spoon whenever possible. Discard the scrub if it develops an unusual smell, visible growth, unexpected bubbling, or a noticeable change in texture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use fresh dragon fruit instead of powder?

No. Fresh fruit contains water, which would completely change the formula and make microbial growth much more likely. Use a dry, finely ground dragon fruit powder for this project.

Will dragon fruit powder stain my skin?

The amount used is small and the scrub is rinsed away, but natural powders can vary. Test a little on a small area of skin first, especially when using a new brand. It may also temporarily stain light-colored washcloths or porous surfaces.

Why are my ombre layers blending together?

The scrub may be too oily, the layers may not have been pressed evenly, or the jar may have been shaken after filling. Add a little more sugar if the mixture looks wet, flatten each layer gently, and keep the finished jar upright.

Can I use this on my face?

I would not. Regular granulated sugar can be too rough for facial skin. This scrub is better suited to the hands and body.
