I’ve had this treat ever since I was a little girl, and I’ve always been crazy about it.

In Venezuela, papitas de leche are usually served plain, white, and rolled into small balls with a clove pressed into the top. The clove gives them a very characteristic aroma, although most people remove it before eating because the flavor is quite strong. I’m one of those. I don’t like cloves at all.

Today I’m sharing the traditional recipe and also a fun Easter version shaped like colorful little eggs, which makes them perfect for spring dessert tables, parties, and edible gifts.

What are Pepitas de Leche?

Papitas de leche are a traditional Venezuelan sweet made from powdered milk, sweetened condensed milk, and powdered sugar. The dough is rolled into small balls that resemble tiny potatoes — which is exactly where the name comes from.

Depending on the region in Venezuela, they may also be called bolitas de leche condensada, mazapán de leche, or delicias de leche, but they all refer to the same delicious milk candy. Those terms mean Condensed Milk Balls, but in English, they could be called milk truffles.

This simple recipe is believed to have originated in the Venezuelan state of Mérida and became popular throughout the country.

What’s so special about these Condensed Milk Truffles

For me, these are more than just candy. They’re part of my childhood and of our culture and traditions.

There’s no road trip in Venezuela without stopping somewhere along the highway and finding little packages of papitas de leche being sold along with other very traditional sweets.

Kids absolutely love them (me included), and it’s very common to find them in bakeries, small shops, and roadside stands.

They’re one of those treats that instantly bring back memories.

And if you want to make them extra cute for Easter, you can simply shape them into small eggs and decorate them with sprinkles.

How to make these Cute Condensed Milk Truffles

Ingredients for Venezuelan Papitas de Leche truffles with condensed milk and sprinkles.

Ingredient:

  • Powdered milk: This gives the truffles their structure and helps create a smooth dough.
  • Sweetened condensed milk: Adds sweetness and moisture and binds the ingredients together.
  • Powdered sugar: Helps thicken the mixture and makes the dough easier to handle when shaping.

Optional for decoration:

  • food coloring
  • sprinkles
  • shredded chocolate
  • cloves (traditional garnish): In Venezuela, papitas de leche are traditionally decorated with a clove on top for aroma and flavor. But since it would look weird pinched on Easter eggs, I just skipped that ingredient.

Directions:

The Dough

  1. In a medium bowl mix the condensed milk and powdered milk using a wooden spoon or whisk until well combined.
  2. Then start adding the icing sugar portions by portions and mix until it becomes thick enough to handle with your hands.
  3. Keep adding powdered sugar until the dough becomes soft, smooth, and moldable and no longer sticks to your hands.
At first, the mixture may feel sticky and messy, but as the ingredients combine the dough becomes easier to work with.

To Make the Traditional Version

  1. Roll the dough into small balls and lightly dust them with powdered sugar.
  2. Place a clove on top of each one if you want to prepare them the traditional Venezuelan way.
  3. Then place them in small candy cups or serve them on a platter.

To Make the Easter Version

  1. For the Easter version, divide the dough into three portions (or more if you like) and tint each with a different color.
  2. I used light pink, blue, and yellow. Because the dough has a creamy color, the blue turned slightly green — but honestly, that made them look even cuter.

  3. Roll small balls first and then gently shape them into little eggs.
  4. They don’t have to be perfect. They may spread slightly once resting on a surface, but they still look adorable.

  5. For a cute presentation, shred some milk chocolate onto a plate to create a little “nest” and place the eggs on top.
