Cinnamon Sugar Brazilian Fried Bananas (Banana à Milanesa)
These bananas are usually served as a side dish, especially with dishes like feijoada, but I made a small variation to turn them more into a snack by coating them with cinnamon sugar. They’re just as delicious either way!
The contrast between the crisp crust on the outside and the soft, sweet banana inside — with that touch of sweet and salty — is absolutely delicious and very popular in Brazil.

WHAT IS Brazilian DEEP-FRIED BANANAS?
It’s a Brazilian dish made with simple ingredients: bananas, all-purpose flour, eggs, and bread crumbs. The bananas are cut in half or quarters, then breaded in flour, eggs, and bread crumbs, and finally fried in oil until golden and crispy.
In Brazil, banana fritters are most commonly served as a side dish, although some people enjoy them as a dessert coated with cinnamon and sugar and even topped with ice cream.
How to Make Brazilian Fried Bananas
Ingredients:
- Bananas cut into 2 or 4 – small and ripe, yet firm bananas.
- Large eggs
- Light cream.
- Crumb bread
- All-purpose flour
- White Sugar
- Cinnamon powder
Directions
- In a deep heavy-bottom pan, heat enough oil to fry the bananas to 350ºF (180ºC).
- Peel the bananas, remove any stringy parts, and cut them crosswise in half or quarters.
- In a small bowl, beat the eggs with the light cream.
- On a plate, mix the bread crumbs and flour (as indicated in the recipe card).
- Dip the banana pieces into the egg mixture to coat them lightly. Let any excess drip off.
- Coat each piece in the dry mixture, turning and pressing gently so the coating sticks well. Shake off any excess.
- Dip them again briefly in the egg mixture, then coat once more with the bread crumb mixture for a crispier crust.
- Place the coated bananas on a plate or wax paper.

- In another small bowl, mix the sugar and cinnamon.
- Fry a few banana pieces at a time in the hot oil until golden brown and crispy, about 1–2 minutes per side. Turn them so they cook evenly.
- Remove from the oil and immediately coat them in the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
- Place them on a paper towel-lined plate and serve warm.
- Serve as a side dish or enjoy as a sweet snack. You can also add a scoop of vanilla ice cream if you want to turn it into a simple dessert.
- Enjoy!
Recipe Tips
- Use ripe but firm bananas. If they’re too soft, they can fall apart when frying.
- Don’t skip the double coating. That second layer helps create that crispy crust.
- Make sure the oil is hot (around 350°F / 180°C). If it’s not hot enough, the bananas will soak up oil and turn soggy.
- Fry in small batches so the oil temperature stays steady.
- Coat them in the cinnamon sugar while they’re still hot so it sticks better.
- Serve right away. They’re best fresh and crispy.

Woot! There you have it! Some delicious cinnamon sugar Brazilian fried bananas! What do you think? Have you tried these before?

Variation and alternatives
You can replace the flour and bread crumbs with gluten-free versions.
You can replace bananas with plantains, but make sure they are fully ripe (with a very dark or black peel). Don’t worry, they won’t be mushy once fried because plantains are naturally firmer.
For an eggless version, use milk or light cream instead of eggs.
