Diy Capri Pants From Jeans that run short on kids
Remember my post How to Lengthen Pants That Are Too Short??? So yeah, one of my favorite goals is to extend my girlโs clothes life and Iโm sure most of you like this idea too!

So thatโs why Iโm sharing today this idea to refashion kids’ old pants that run short and have pants for a little longer for kids that tend to develop height faster than body mass volume as they grow as mine does!
This is one of the easiest refashions EVER! You only need a few decorating supplies {ribbon and buttons in my case}, thread and needle and the best part is that you get to save money in your clothing budget! Not bad huh?
Another great thing about this is that you can do this to your own pants and have a unique look!!! Awesome right?
How To Turn Jeans Into Capris for your little one
Supplies:
- A pair of pants that run short on your kid
- 2″ wide ribbon of your choosing
- A few cute buttons โ I love mixing and matching different colors and sizes.
- Matching color thread
Tools:
- Pair of Scissors.
- Needle
- Pins
Instructions:
So choose the pants you have around that no longer fit the length of your kid’s legs. In my case, I had these denim ones! My girl tends to stretch in height but little to the sides so all her pants easily get short while fitting perfectly on her waist.
Double-fold the hem of the pants. You can cut the actual hem if you want but I chose just to fold them. Depending on the length you want the amount varies.
Do some stitches on both sides of the leg along with the side seam so it wonโt unfold when washing or while wearing them.
Cut a strip of ribbon, about 3 to 4 inches long.
Fold one end, place it on the outer side of the leg side seam, and stitch it to the folded hem line on the inside of the pants (wrong side):
Fold the ribbon so it would around the edge to the outside of the pants (right sides) and then fold the other end of the ribbon to shape it like an arrow. Pin in place.
Place some cute buttons over the ribbon close to the end and stitch everything together.
Repeat the process with the other leg.
Then on the back, I applied the same cute buttons but different colors to the back pockets.
Choose your favorite placement and stitch them in place.
Tadaaaaa a brand new capris!
Thatโs it, you have some cute DIY capri pants that will probably last a lot longer!
Crating Tips
- Give your DIY capris a unique touch by using fabric paint to create fun designs or patterns. Let your kids get involved and express their creativity!
- Transform plain jeans into personalized capris by incorporating patches or embroidery. It’s a fantastic way to repurpose old clothes while adding a touch of individuality.
- If the jeans are too short even for capris, don’t fret! Transform them into stylish shorts by cutting them just above the knee and adding a neat hemline.
- Instead of buttons, add flair to the capris by sewing on decorative patches or fabric appliques to the back pockets.
- Use contrasting thread colors for the topstitching on the capris. It adds a pop of color and gives them a professional finish.
Just take a look at my girl, she loves it and she’s been using those same pants since she is 18 months with different looks! Cool right?
